Physical Education:

What Does My Student Wear For PE?

•  A PE Uniform consists of a white or light grey t shirt, black shorts, socks, and shoes that can be laced up tight.  We suggest getting a uniform from the front office, but it is not required to purchase one from the school.  Expensive athletic clothes are not advised because they could get dirty or even ripped during activity.  We also require each student to write their first name and last name initial on the front of their PE shirt (about two inch letters).  We would advise that their name be written somewhere on them.  Please keep in mind that this is a coed class and tight-fitting clothes would not be appropriate in this setting. 

• We ask students to take home their PE clothes at the end of each week to have them washed.  Because it is not always possible to wash clothes on the weekends, we suggest that the students have a backup uniform.  If the backup does not conform to the regular uniform standards, have your student tell the teacher that it is a backup uniform (and not what they wore to school!) and they will not be docked participation points for that day.

Will My Student Need To Buy a Lock?

• Students will have a lock and locker issued to them.  We cannot allow a lock from home to be used.  Students will be responsible to make sure the lock is returned in good condition.  There will be time spent in class on how to open a lock.  

Are There Changing Stalls and Showers in the Locker Rooms?

• Yes.  There are showers and changing stalls with curtains in each locker room.  Showers are not required.  If a student does want to shower, they are responsible for bringing their own towel and soap.  

What Sports Will We Be Doing?

• We will be doing a variety of sports and activities.  For most of the team sports, they will last a full week.  There will also be many recreational games that will be included in the lifetime sports unit.  Some of the team sports include: Volleyball, Basketball, Kickball, Softball, Floor Hockey, Soccer, Ultimate Football, Badminton, and Pickleball. Other activities will include: Frisbee Golf, Can Jam, Bottledrop, Bocce, Ladderball, Cornhole, Spikeball, Slackline, Human Rubberband, Crossnet, and Nine Square.  Fridays, the 6th and 7th grade will often be combined together doing a group game in the gym.  Often this game will involve throwing balls at each other.  If this is a concern, there will be an alternative activity that is available (usually nine square, spikeball, or Crossnet).

What is the Bolt Fitness Leader Program?

• Some students are ready to have more challenge and freedom in their PE experience.  There will be a select number of 7th grade students who will be nominated based on their performance in class during the first quarter of classes.  Teachers will not look at ability as much as they will look for work ethic, responsibility and sportsmanship.  These students will receive an invitation email with an application.  Once accepted, these students will receive the following opportunities:

  • • • Use the weight room for their workouts on select days

      • Participate in an archery unit

      • Lead the workouts and some activities

      • Have an opportunity to earn a 3+ grade for certain strands

Are There Opportunities For Parents To Get Involved?

• • • Yes.  Parents are invited to PE (T-Th) during a week in October and again in April.  During this week, students are in charge of class and will be leading the workouts and explaining the rules for your choice of games and activities. More Information will go out when it gets closer. Another opportunity is the Turkey Trot where Families are invited.  It is traditionally held the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.  The race is just under 2 miles and is around the school and neighboring ball fields.  Winners for each student division will receive cool prizes.

Health:

When Do The Students Attend The Health Classroom?

• There are five units that will be covered in the Health Classroom.  Each unit takes one week.  On Health days, the students will not change out.  The Health classroom is room 604.  We have tried to schedule the health weeks primarily during the weeks that traditionally have bad weather.  For 1st Semester, 2023, the classroom schedule is as follows:

  • • • Goals & Positive Self Image (STRAND 1): August 28-Sept 1

      • Substance Abuse Prevention (STRAND 4): November 13-17

      • Safety & Disease Prevention (STRAND 3): Nov 20, 28-Dec 1

      • Mental and Emotional Health (STRAND 2): December 4-8

      • Nutrition (STRAND 5): December 11-15

What If I Miss a Day of Health?

• Because we have condensed Health to 5 weeks, each day will be packed with information.  Each unit will have one assignment and one test that will be posted on Schoology. There will also be class discussion and notes each day.  Students can get caught up by asking a classmate or by going to Health website.  Class notes, video links, and discussion questions are provided on the website.  

I Am Worried About the Content Being Taught. How Can I Find Out What Is Being Taught?

• The most controversial topics in Health deal with Human Development and are taught through the Science classes.  There will be some sensitive subjects taught in Health that include discussions on human trafficking, the harmful effects of pornography, suicide prevention, and substance abuse.  For a full list of subjects on the curriculum, go to:
